Happy Chinese New Year : Year of the Tiger

A Virtual Exhibit from the collection of the Hagen History Center.
Accession#:
2019x
Object Name:
Crock
Description:
Large Chinese motif clay pot with mythical creatures on each side. Stored with other large Decorative Arts collection. The dominant color of the pot is brown with yellow or amber portions. Mythical creatures on each side are most likely decorative handles. They may be either lions or dogs and are covered in what may possibly be round tufts of fur. The fur portions of the creature are in lighter, yellow color compared to the rest of the creature, which is in a brown color. The face of the pot features two figures on one side. One may be a warrior or soldier holding a spear in his right hand, a scholar or bureaucrat holding a scroll using both hands. The other side features a seated man looking at a carpet being held by another man who is standing as a child looks on. The spaces between the figures are filled with what seems to be either tree leaves or cloud patterns.
VE Exhibit Label 1:
This beautiful pot was found in the collection without a real catalog number. We don't know who donated it or when, but hope that future research will yield it's story.
