Noel Burgoyne has been volunteering for many nonprofits since she retired 25 years ago.
The 85-year-old has volunteered for the Art Museum, Erie Phil, Niagara League, Jr. Phil, SafeNet, Mercyhurst University, St. Peter Cathedral, Foundation for Erie’s Public Schools Board, Emergycare and the ECHS.
Majoring in both English and History at then Mercyhurst College, Noel taught both subjects at the college and high school levels. She taught at Mercyhurst College for 2 years, Case Western Reserve for 2 years, McDowell for 3 years, and Academy (now Collegiate) for 35 years.
Noel has been interested in history all her life and went to the historical museum when it was in basement of Public Library on S. Park Row and later at State Street. She’s followed the museum all around Erie.
“I enjoy volunteering. Everyone at ECHS is grateful for what you do when volunteering and its’ such a worthy cause” Noel said. She wants to help keep Erie’s history interesting for both locals and tourists.
“Without the nonprofits, Erie would be a boring place to live.” She volunteers because “volunteering is delightful, you meet many different people, you make friends, you get out of the house and it’s a fulfilling way to live your life.”
